Dear Friends,
It is with tremendous sadness and regret that after 45 years of your friendship and loyalty to me, I must say goodbye. After eight decades Winchester Drug is forced to closed their doors. The Winchester Community was very fortunate to have an independent pharmacy for so many years. The chain pharmacy insurance cards and mandatory mail order has made it impossible to continue.
I'm very sorry that I couldn't speak to each of you personally and explain the transfer because of the legal requirements of the sale.
Thank you very much for your kindness and friendship over the years.I wish you all good health.
Sincerely,
Sydna Anderson

A loss! Did cvs buy the building or just the business? Wondering what will happen to the gorgeous bldg...

Winchester Drug does not own the building. John Moriarty owns the building.
CVS bought the prescriptions and inventory.
In theory it would be possible for another independent drugstore to rent the space but
it is very, very difficult to operate an independent drugstore these days for the reasons that Syd mentioned in her letter. Insurers make their largest profit when people buy their drugs through mail order so that's what more and more people are pressured to do. Also one company owns both Caremark prescription insurance and CVS so when people received Caremark cards with a big CVS logo on them they erroneously thought that they had to get their precriptions through CVS. It was very misleading. Winchester Drug lost a lot of business because of it.

I went in there once and the red headed lady was not so pleasant. I never went back

This is a huge loss for Winchester and a very unfortunate sign of the times. Winchester Drug has been in business through 3 generations of my family--they even used to deliver medications years ago! Syd has always been friendly, caring, and helpful to my family whenever we were in the store, just like Al & Tom, and the many other pharmacists/staff members who have worked there. We always appreciated the way they cared about their customers--and one could always trust their knowledge and professionalism The town is losing a good friend as well as a town business with this store's closing. Best wishes to all at Winchester Drug in your future endeavors and THANK YOU for your decades of FINE service to our community.

Syd and all the staff at Winchester Drug served me and my family very well for many years and I applaud their many successful years. As many know, I am a major fan of independent businesses and my hope for the future is that another community oriented indie shop will carry on the legacy of that address started so long ago by the Camuso family.
