Robbery at Sovereign Bank on Church Street

The Sovereign Bank at 7 Church Street was robbed by means of a passed note this afternoon.

Winchester Police confirmed Tuesday that the Sovereign Bank at 7 Church St. was robbed this afternoon.

Lt. Peter MacDonnell of the Winchester Police Department said at 3:28 p.m. Tuesday police were alerted by a teller alarm at Soveriegn Bank. Winchester police responded to the alarm and learned a robbery had taken place.

According to MacDonnell, the suspect handed a note to a teller that read "Give me all you cash. Hurry up." The teller complied and the man fled, with the note, in an unknown vehicle in an unknown direction. The suspect left the bank with an undisclosed amount of money, MacDonnell said.

The suspect is described as a white male in his early 20s, about five-feet, six-inches tall with a thin build. Suspect was wearing black sweatpants, a gray hooded sweatshirt, white sneakers, black gloves and a black Red Sox baseball cap. MacDonnell said this afternoon that the department is viewing surveillance tapes and will make an image of the suspect available to the public when possible.

MacDonnell said because there is currently no information on the vehicle or the direction in which the suspect fled, the police will most likely need public assistance in finding the suspect.

"It took a long time for the bank to provide a description," he said. "If we are going to resolve this it will come from information provided by the public."

If you have information related to this incident, contact the Winchester Police Department at 781-729-1212.
