Two Winchester Businesses Bake for Breast Cancer

The Chocolate Truffle and 7ate9 Bakery are serving up special desserts in May to benefit Dana-Farber's breast cancer research.

How can you combine chocolate, cheesecake, and supporting a good cause? With Boston Bakes for Breast Cancer. This May, two Winchester businesses will participate in the week-long event, donating the proceeds of two special desserts to breast cancer research at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Helping out is as simple as buying a special dessert between Monday, May 2 and Sunday, May 8 (Mother’s Day).

“It’s exciting for us because we were able to create a new recipe,” said Erin Calvo-Bacci of , which is in its second year participating in Boston Bakes for Breast Cancer. That new recipe is a Raspberry Caramel, which Calvo-Bacci describes as “a raspberry-infused caramel covered in dark chocolate.”

If you’re more inclined toward cheesecake, go ahead and order a Classic Cheesecake with Strawberry Sauce from 7ate9 Bakery during Boston Bakes for Breast Cancer. As a new Winchester business, this is

“I heard about [it] last fall, soon after my grandmother passed away from her second battle with breast cancer,” said 7ate9 Bakery owner Sarah-Beth Chester.  “It makes me feel good to do this and to be able to honor her in that way.  I also speak to a lot of customers affected by breast cancer. I recently talked to a customer with breast cancer who is going through treatments, and was able to tell her we were doing this.”

Chester’s grandmother loved the classic cheesecake, but “since it’s May and strawberries are in season, we’re doing strawberries,” said Chester.  “Especially after the winter we’ve had, everyone deserves a little bit of spring.”

The Chocolate Truffle also has a personal connection to breast cancer. Soon after Calvo-Bacci took over the business, the original Chocolate Truffle owner, Barbara Yankovich, was diagnosed with breast cancer.

“I’m happy to report that she is doing great now,” said Calvo-Bacci. But the experience prompted her to donate to breast cancer research.

“I have three young girls and the reality is this could affect one of them -- or me, “ said Calvo-Bacci. “The more awareness we have and the more money we can raise to help eradicate breast cancer will just be better for all of us.”

“I hope that, for all the businesses, it works out really well and we’re able to raise a lot of money for research,” said Chester. Thinking of her grandmother again, she added, “I know that if she were here, she’d be really excited about our participation in this.  It’s something she would be proud of.”
