VIDEO: Tour of the Vinson-Owen School
On Sunday, the League of Women Voters invited residents to take a look at the elementary school.
On Tuesday, the town will be asked to vote on whether or not they want to fund the building of a new 420-student elementary school. The estimated cost of this project, according to the Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA) is $28,170,307. Out of that amount, the state is reimbursing the town $10,188,822 and Winchester will spend $17,981,485 on the project.
The League of Women Voters on Sunday held an informational forum on the override vote that will be taking place on Tuesday, Jan. 11. As part of the forum, the league invited members of the community in for a tour of the current building.
Below is some video of a walking tour of the current Vinson-Owen building.

What this shows is slovenly, careless housekeeping on the part of the students, teachers, administrators, and custodians. How disgusting, that Winchester taxpayers provide facilities that the people who use them feel entitled to simply trash.
Shame on the Superintendent for letting the school premises exist in this condition, shame on everyone else for creating the filthy mess.
And shame on the Winchester community for not doing a better job of monitoring and holding its employees accountable for the property we entrust into their hands.
Absolutely repulsive. And in 10 years time, the new building will be no doubt just as bad.
Nice going, Winchester.

This is a clear example of the neglect Winchester inflicted upon V-O over the years.
The teachers and students did the best they could with what they were given. We tend to forget that due to low enrollment rates in the 1980's and early 1990's, the town routinely threatened to close down the school for good. Because of this, no significant repairs or renovations were ever made.
I am a 1994 graduate of V-O, and I can say that the school was falling apart when I attended. What is unfortunate is that beacause of the neglect of this school, a unique and fun building only 50 years old has been leveled at an astronomical cost to the residents.
