Week in Review: A Fire, Courtroom Cleared and Businesses Struggling

Local landscapers, who rely on plowing to help them get through the winter months, have been struggling this year as Winchester has barely received 11 inches of snow.
Thomas Mortimer’s attorney, Denise Regan, requested the courtroom be cleared and the information in Friday’s motion hearing be impounded.
The Winchester Fire Department responded to an Arlington Street home to extinguish a fire. A faulty gas heater, according to Fire Chief John Nash, started the blaze. The house suffered approximately $150,000 worth of damage.

Winchester may not have to face an override vote after all.
According to Town Manager Richard Howard, the state recently announced that Chapter 70 funds would increase by $150 million statewide. And due to the town’s growing school enrollment, Winchester will see between $800 and $900K in state funds.
Earlier this year, the MBTA announced that they are looking at increasing fares, while cutting services for buses and commuter rail.
According to the state's transportation website, those cuts could include elimination of commuter rail services after 10 p.m. during the week and completely on the weekend.
The Winchester Board of Selectmen did not agree with the proposed changes.
Finding fresh, locally grown produce in the winter can be a challenge, but Winchester’s latest market looks to change that. Mahoney’s Winter Market has been open for three weeks. Held in one of the garden center’s massive greenhouses, the winter market includes 25 vendors selling everything from parsnips to alpaca wool gloves.
Under a proposal by Gov. Deval Patrick, "sin taxes" on cigarettes will increase and new sales taxes on candy and soda will be put into place.
Patrick is proposing the increase as a way to raise $260 million in new revenues for the state budget, according to an Associated Press article on Wednesday.
