Week in Review: Budgets, Principals and Polio

Take a look back at the top stories in Winchester last week.

The Winchester Rotary Club, along with Winchester High School students that make up Winchester Interact, raised money to end polio by jumping into the ocean.

Did you check out last week’s Whiz Kid? It was high school senior, Samantha Mangano. Have a suggestion of who our next Winchester student should be? Let us know.

The Winchester Multicultural Network (WMCN) is offering a workshop that will focus on multiculturalism in the community.

Recently, the U.S. Figure Skating Association released the documentary, RISE, that focused on the 1961 figure skating team that died in a plane crash. To honor the Vinson-Owen family from Winchester, students at Vinson-Owen Elementary travelled to Stoneham and skated around the ice rink.

The Vinson-Owen school also has a new principal that was appointed last week. Grant Smith of Malden was chosen as the permanent principal, replacing longtime Vinson-Owen staple, Guido Sabelli, who retired at the beginning of the year.

The Lynch fifth graders defeated the teachers in the fourth annual basketball game.

The town of Winchester recently released its proposed budget for Fiscal Year 2012. It contains two budgets – one if the March 29 override passes and another if it fails.

Make sure you take some photos of the BeGinn Again Fundraiser held at the Black Horse Tavern. And in this week’s edition of Patch Picks, we listed five boutiques that are favorites in Winchester.

In real estate news, be sure to take a look at the homes that sold in and around Winchester last week. We also had a list of open houses around town.
