Winchester Under Flood Warning, Aberjona River Water Levels Increase
The National Weather Service has issued a flood warning until at least 6:15 p.m. this evening.
The National Weather Service has issued a flood warning for Winchester and much of New England due to heavy rains in the area.
The flood warning is in effect until 6:15 p.m. tonight.
According to the NWS, the Aberjona River is approaching flood stage. At 8:15 a.m. on Sunday morning, the river was observed at 12.05 feet. The river hits its flood stage when water levels reach 13 feet.
Hurricane Irene is bringing more than two inches of rain per hour to the area, the NWS reported.
According to the NWS, the biggest dangers from flooding is for people in low-lying areas and in automobiles.
"Excessive runoff from heavy rainfall will cause flooding of small creaks and streams," the NWS said in a statement. "Streams and other low-lying areas are subject to flooding."
The NWS advises drivers to turn around to avoid water covering the road.
Also, anyone living in an area prone to flooding should head for higher ground immediately.
