Spring Strawberries and Cream on Biscuits

Pair fresh strawberries with sugar, cream and buttermilk biscuits for a delicious Spring dessert.

"One must ask children and birds how cherries and strawberries taste." ~Johann Wolfgang von Goethe I noticed the other day that our strawberry plants are beginning to grow and I already can't wait to pick them fresh from the garden. They are much smaller than the berries you get at the supermarket but they are sweeter and tastier. I immediately began to crave strawberry shortcake. I stopped at the market and found some nice red ripe strawberries but there were no packages of shortcakes in sight. I thought about making my own (nah, too lazy). I looked at the angel food cake (nah, not one of my favorites). Then I wandered over to get the cream and there was my answer...buttermilk biscuits. Just pop open the can, throw 'em in the oven and …

Griffin Museum Celebrates 100 Years of Fenway Park

Twenty years of the Griffin Museum of Photography and 100 years of Fenway Park celebrated with two unique exhibits.

Think back to the first time you ever stepped foot in Fenway Park. Imagine that breath taking moment in time when you first laid eyes on the field, The Green Monster, Pesky’s Pole and the big score board underneath the big lights. That moment is one that has stopped generations of Americans and baseball fans from all over the world in their tracks. Fenway Park embodies the faith, tradition and loyalty of a self-defined “nation” of believers. The Griffin Museum is celebrating both the 100-year anniversary of Fenway Park as well as the 20-year anniversary of the Museum. The museum is celebrating America’s most beloved ballpark with two exhibhits for baseball lovers to conjure up memories, stories and impressions from this landmark. Fenway …

Keepin' Things Spicy in the Kitchen

The list of ingredients in this Hot and Sour Soup may seem extensive, but the end result makes it all worthwhile.

Good manners: The noise you don't make when you're eating soup. ~Bennett Cerf Recently a coworker of mine was heating up his lunch in the microwave and the smell was so amazing that I had to walk over and investigate. Dan told me that he and his wife had made hot and sour soup the previous weekend. This was what was making my mouth water. A few days later my husband and I were shopping and I came upon a magazine dedicated to one pot recipes. I flipped through it and came upon a recipe for hot and sour soup. It had to be a sign! I needed to make this soup...and buy this magazine. My husband commented that I could justify just about any purchase. I suppose he has a point. But still...how could I ignore such an obvious sign? Anyway, I did …

Skip the Gym, Get Your Mussels at Home Instead

Why pay big bucks for an appetizer in a restaurant? Make delicious steamed mussels for a fraction of the cost in your own kitchen.

"I'm on a seafood diet.  I see food and I eat it."  ~Author Unknown I was not a fan of seafood until recently. The most I would eat was shrimp cocktail or a tunafish sandwich (which hardly classifies as seafood to most folks.) That was until my husband and I went to an inn one weekend that was serving steamed mussels as an appetizer. I threw caution to the wind and gave them a try. I have been hooked ever since. Not only are mussels delicious but they are also considered a "power food" since they are an excellent source of protein and have more iron and vitamin B12 than beef. They are also very easy to prepare and relatively inexpensive. I use a very basic recipe of steaming the mussels in butter, white wine, shallots and garlic. Before I …

Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close I saw this movie yesterday. If this movie does not affect its viewers, I would be totally surprised. I need to see it again as once was not enough. It is a long movie - about two hours - and I would suggest a Parent preview it before showing it to their children. The subject matter is very deep and emotional. No, it not a "chick flick."   more ›
