A few hundred people attended the community event which featured several rounds of trivia played by five 5th grade teams representing the local elementary schools as well as adult teams. There was a tie for first place between Lincoln and Lynch Elementary Schools, so they will be sharing the Trivia Bee Trophy this year. Winchester Pharmacy opened its doors to customers on a snowy Monday in town. Dozens attended the grand opening of a new martial arts studio Saturday morning in Winchester. Elite Freestyle Karate, which has two other locations in Reading and Wilmington, held the grand opening from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Jan. 12 on the second floor at 750 Main St. in Winchester. Saturday morning was snowing, but it didn’t stop folks from coming to the annual Lincoln School fifth Grade Pancake Breakfast. The pancake breakfast ran like ‘clockwork’ according to many patrons, thanks to the parent volunteers and eager-to-help fifth graders. Parent volunteers were flipping pancakes, cooking sausage and serving up a delicious breakfast. But it was the fifth graders who stole the show; acting as the maitre d’, filling food orders, serving guests, and keeping the cafeteria in top shape…
The Raiders came out of the locker room and played like last year's state finalists, but after the first quarter Winchester dominated the boards and stopped Watertown's top scorer, Patrick McHugh, on the way to a 58-45 win for the visitors. Senior captain McHugh scored 9 of the Raiders' 11 first quarter points, and Watertown led by three after one period. He scored four more early in the second, but the Sachems battled back to end the half on a 12-2 run, giving Winchester a 21-17 lead at the half. While the weather in the Winchester area on Monday was a bit unseasonable - sunny skies with temperatures in the mid-40s - it was a different story one year ago. On Dec. 26, 2010, Winchester, along with much of the rest of the state, was pummeled with a storm that dumped several inches of snow on the area. The blizzard prompted a number of closings and cancellations in Winchester, but despite the disruption, things went rather smoothly for the Winchester Department of Public Works. Last Saturday, kids of all ages came out to see Santa make a personal appearance at the Town Hall. Sponsored by the Recreation Center, a breakfast of donoughts, bagels, fruit and more were served and "Mr. Ed", the musicman performed some Christmas classics. The collective strength of local women was on full display at the Winchester Country Club on Sunday afternoon, Dec. 4, as little girls in holiday dresses joined their mothers, grandmothers and friends at the Winchester Country Club for a holiday high tea. The tea, a fundraiser for a girls’ school in rural India, was sponsored by a local organization, Live, Learn, Act. The Ambrose Learning Center is named in honor of the local elementary school which has forged a relationship with the school in India. The Winchest Veteran's Day Parade began at the high school, then went around the common, and concluded with a ceremony at town hall. The parade then stopped to place a wreath on the World War I monument behind the Lincoln School.

A host of environmental groups and businesses came together Saturday to put on Winchester's fourth annual Environmental Fair. Sustainable Winchester organized the event that brought together groups to promote green and sustainable attitudes and ideas. Many green companies displayed their products and services, while non-profits Sustainable Harvest International and the Sea Shaphard organization promoted their programs.
On the morning of Saturday, Sept. 24, Bryan Hamlin from the Friends of the Middlesex Fells led a hike through the Winchester Reservoirs region of the Fells. Winchester Fire and Rescue brought in ladder trucks, an ambulance, and other emergency response equipment to Winchester High School for the Families and Firetrucks event. The event was sponsored by the Winchester Familiy Action Network. Take a look at some photos from the event.
Beer, bratwurst and streudal were served at the Oktoberfest 2011, as well as a lot of Sam Adams. The band, the Jolly Kopperschmidts, performed at a packed Town Hall and the Rotary Club saw another successful fundraising event.
Those who were lucky enough to get tickets to Wright-Locke Farm's weekend events got to enjoy their newly improved barn and delicious food. The first event held last Friday evening had hors d'oeuvres made with vegetables and fruit grown right on the farm along with cocktails. The harvest dinner on Sunday evening featured a huge table that ran the length of the barn and lots food made with freshly harvested produce.
