The Winchester Interfaith Council hosted a memorial service on the Town Common to honor those effected by the attacks of September 11, 2001. Be sure to check out our photo gallery of the event.
Town Common was bustling recently with a crowd of children and parents attending the Art in the Park event. There were arts and crafts activities set up for the kids to engage their creativity as well as live entertainment and the farmer's market. The kids tried their hands at painting, played at the crafts table, and learned pottery with local high school teacher Terry Lannon. Take a peek at some photos from the event.
Though Hurricane Irene left a wake of destruction in its path, with downed trees and power lines in nearly every town in the area, one thing it did not slow down work on the Aberjona River. The river widening project is now officially underway with work being conducted along the Mystic River Valley Parkway. The project calls for a widening of the river between Waterfield and Manchester Roads, as well as enlargement of the channel’s existing bottom width from 20 to 35 feet.
The second season of the Winchester Pop Warner Cheerleading program has officially begun with practices being held four nights a week.   The girls are bonding and learning about teamwork, citizenship friendship and fitness and having a blast doing it, according to coach Maria O'Connor. "We are so excited that the program has grown by more than 50 percent this year," she said. "The girls are very energetic and eager to learn more and more."
The August heat does not deter the enthusiasm of the Winchester Pop Warner football team. With their 'game faces in place, coaches and boys are out putting forth their best effort in preparation for the season.  Michael Bongiorno, WPW President said, "We are very excited to start our second season. Our program has grown from year one to year two, and almost every boy who was eligible to return came back. Having so many experienced players and coaches this year has made practices run smoothly and all of the boys are looking forward to getting back out onto Manchester Field to play this Fall."
The Arts and Crafts Fair, sponsored by the Winchester Cultural Council and the ENKA Society hosted over a dozen vendors this past Saturday as the first event of the Art in August celebration. A sunny day, many residents came out to enjoy the fair and browse the unique items for sale before heading to the Farmers Market. 
The new school year is fast-approaching. In less than four weeks Winchester students will be heading back to school. But for Vinson-Owen students, they will spend the next two years at the Parkhurst School, while a new school is built. According to Bob Deering, chair of the Educational Facilities Planning and Building Committee (EFPBC), Parkhurst is on schedule to be completed and fully renovated in time for the new school year. "There's still a lot of work to do, but it's all mapped out and we're on schedule for competition," Deering said. "They ought to be able to move into a functional …
After having an early one-run lead, Winchester oculd not hold on against the team from Rhode Island, losing 4-3 in the semfinals of the Cal Ripken Regional Tournament at Nutile Field. After taking a 3-2 lead after the third inning, the Rhode Island team scored twice in the bottom of the fifth to give the Sachems their first loss in the double-elimination tournament. With cosmopolitans and chocolate strawberries in abundance, more than four dozen Winchester residents filled in Katana Salon and Spa recently to celebrate Katana's newly renovated and expanded space. Private styling lessons were issued by co-owner and operator of the Salon, Kathy Auciello, with Spa treatment run-downs given by Katana's other Co-Owner and Operator of the Spa, Alana Ricca. Winchester Chamber of Commerce's Annual Garden Tour enjoyed very balmy temperatures and sunny skies Thursday afternoon. Green-fingered enthusiasts looking for inspiration, tips and tricks made their way around 12 gardens in Winchester. Gardens ranged from home-planted and long nurtured landscapes, to architecturally designed masterpieces. 
Winchester runners aged nine to 14 got a chance to compete in the Hershey Track Meet at the Winchester High School track. Over 200 Winchester runners signed up to compete. The top times advanced to the state meet and eventually those runners could be competing in the national meet at Hershey Park. The Ginn Playground Restoration Project together with the Stone Family hosted “A Race to Remember” on Sunday, June 12 to celebrate the lives of Charlotte Mortimer, Finn Mortimer, Laura Stone-Mortimer, and Ragna Ellen Stone. Funds raised from “A Race to Remember” will be used to build a memorial at Ginn Playground in honor of the deceased members of the Stone-Mortimer family. The Ginn Playground Restoration Project is a collaborative effort started in Fall 2009 by Winchester residents to rebuild Ginn Playground. The project just needs an additional $20,000 to complete fundraising and complete …
Winchester Police, Fire and the Department of Public Works practiced a safety drill on Tuesday with officers from Woburn, Lexington, Stoneham, Medford and Burlington. Officers gathered in the back of the Fire Department as Sergeant Dan Perenick of the Winchester PD went over the scenario -- two gunmen took over Winchester High School. The police cloased down Skillings Road for two hours Tuesday morning at they ran through their drill. Winchester's Town Day was held this past Saturday amid sunshine and blue skies. Families came out to party and enjoy the atmosphere. And of course, the duck drop was a big hit (after a bit of a rough start). Check out some photos of the petting zoo, dunk tank and other sights seen on the day. 
Winchester's Splash Park finally opened this past Saturday. The new splash pad is 3,000 square feet and features 19 water spray elements. “What we’ve been focusing on is to create a community space,” said Elizabeth Angelino, chair of FANSplash. “We’re creating a space that is multigenerational.”In order to create that community space, FANSplash planted three new trees and installed three new picnic benches, a new swing set, a tire swing, and a bike rack. Winchester resident Greg Quill was in the air force police for 20 years and served a tour in Ppakistan in 2007 For the last four years, Quill and his family have been placing 2,000 flags around Wildwood Cemetery in honor of veterans for Memorial Day. This year, Quilll enlisted the help of the Winchester High School wrestling team and the local cub scout troop, to help honor the veterans with the placing of the flags.
