First, a snow cancellation - then a roof safety cancellation, but the popular event finally went ahead Saturday night at The Marriott Hotel in Burlington. Recreation Director, Chris Nelson, admitted that this year's dance had not been without its challenges, but was pleased the day had finally arrived and was encouraged by the high attendance. The turnout last Wednesday night at the Black Horse Tavern filled Winchester's newest restaurant as residents and neighbors came out to support the Ginn Field Restoration Project. A portion of the evenings sales went to help fund the project and fill out the remaining funds needed to finish the playground. The BeGinn Again Organization has raised $240,000, which is enough to break ground on the park. The park still needs another $35,000 in order to be completed. There was a raffle and prizes that included a weekend in New York, Boston Celtics tickets and personal training sessions.
Fifty years ago, the Vinson-Owen family of Winchester, along with the rest of the 1961 US Oympic figure skating team, died in a plane crash. Shortly after the death of the family, Sherman "Whip" Saltmarsh named the new elementary school after the Vinson-Owen's, who lived on High Street. Last Thursday night, the Vinson-Owen family, along with the other members of the U.S. national team, were honored in a one-night showing of the documentary – RISE.
Valentine treats, music, wine and love were celebrated this past Friday night at the Valentine's Dance at the Jenks Center. Singles and couples of all ages danced the night away to the sounds of the Fred Manzi Trio. Over 100 people turned out to enjoy the evening.
The Winchester Foundation for Educational Excellence (WFEE) held its Eighth annual Trivia Bee Wednesday night. Founded in 1992, the WFEE is a non-profit organization whose goal is to support innovation and excellence in Winchester Public Schools. The McCall Parent's Association team (Scott Batty, Malini Dutta and Philip George) won this year's trophy. And the Ambrose team comprised of Michael Senko, Varahunan Mathiyalakan and Linnea Holahan won the fifth grade competition. It's been another snowy week for Winchester. Tuesday and Wednesday saw a foot of snow fall on the town, which was followed by some sleet and freezing rain. The storm has blanketed the town with more than enough snow and ice over the last two days. The one positive from this weather are the images it creates.
