For the past two years, Winchester High School has mandated a baseline measurement of student athlete's neurocognitive abilities for all students participating in contact sports. Using an internet-based screening tool called  "HeadMinder," student's recognition, recall, speed and accuracy is measured and an individual baseline determined during the preseason. Since the former Town Manager's departure on June 30, 2010, the Winchester Board of Selectmen have been planning the process of determining a replacement. The first step has been interviewing consultants to help with the overall process. Having interviewed four, the Selectmen are poised to begin the public input process. The Winchester Coalition for a Safer Community has launched a study aimed at understanding how bullying is perceived by the community. Recent legislation, prompted by the widely reported suicides of two children brought on by relentless bullying, was approved on May 3. The new law requires school districts to implement a "Bullying Prevention & Intervention Plan" by the end of the year. The Coalition has undertaken a "brainstorming" effort this summer to better understand local attitudes.
