Abby Kennels Gets Off The Couch

A discussion about a growing health problem for dogs.

“She could stand to lose a good five pounds.”

“Couldn’t we all?” I almost replied.

The impossibly young, impossibly serious, vet did not look in the mood for my sarcastic wit so I simply nodded instead. The fact is, he was right. After a cold winter with too few walks and too many treats, Scarlett was looking a little chubby.

Obesity in dogs, like humans, is an increasing health problem. Simply put, dogs are fatter than ever. That extra weight causes numerous health problems that shorten their life span and adversely affect their quality of life. Even a few extra pounds can add stress to bones and joints and lead to high blood pressure, diabetes, even cancer.

Step one is determining how much and what kind of food to feed your dog. Ask your veterinarian or trainer for help if you need it. Feed your dog two or three small meals a day but pick up the bowl if your pet doesn’t finish. Dogs are not grazing animals. Eliminate all table scraps from your dog’s diet. Finally, keep track of the number of treats your dog is getting. All those little cookies add up.

Step two is increasing exercise. Get out and move with your dog. Regular exercise should be part of your dog’s daily routine. Start slowly and build up stamina. Aim for at least thirty minutes of exercise every day. Take a brisk walk. Teach your dog to play fetch. Swimming is great exercise for the water-loving dog. Let your dog socialize and burn calories while running around doggie daycare. Have fun!

Scarlett and I started walking every day. I complained way more than she did. In fact, after the first few mornings, she would anticipate her walk with unbridled enthusiasm. We gradually worked up from a stroll around the neighborhood to a brisk thirty minute strut. We also play Frisbee and take full advantage of Abby Kennels’ doggie daycare to burn even more calories. I can’t speak for myself but I can tell you, Scarlett looks wonderful.
