Dr. Arlan Fuller Jr. of Winchester is honored by Middlesex District Medical Society as 2014 Community Clinician of the Year

Waltham – April 8 – Winchester physician and resident Arlan F. Fuller Jr., M.D.  has been honored by his physician peers of the Middlesex District Medical Society as the district’s 2014 Community Clinician of the Year, an award recognizing his professionalism and contributions as a physician. He will receive the award at the district’s annual meeting May 3 at the Museum of Science in Boston. 

Board certified in obstetrics and gynecology with a sub-specialty in gynecologic oncology, Dr. Fuller is Clinical Vice President for Oncology Services Integration and Academic Affiliations at Winchester Hospital, a position he has held since 2007.  Prior to joining Winchester Hospital, he was Chief of Gynecologic Oncology from 1985-2007 as well as Co-Director of the Gillette Center for Women’s Cancer at Massachusetts General Hospital. He has also served on the staffs of the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, Mouth Auburn Hospital, and North Shore Medical Center.

A Phi Beta Kappa cum laude graduate of Bowdoin College with a bachelor’s degree, Dr. Fuller earned his medical degree, also cum laude, from Harvard Medical School.  From 1974-2007, he held academic appointments at Harvard Medical School and was appointed Associate Professor of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Biology at the school in 1986. His teaching activities have spanned more than 30 years and included positions at Harvard Medical School, and Winchester Hospital, as well as educational initiatives in Europe and Central and South America with the International Gynecologic Cancer Society. 

Dr. Fuller is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology and is a past president of the New England Association of Gynecologic Oncologists. From 1990-2009, he served as an editorial board member of the European Society of Gynecologic Oncology.

Among his many honors, Dr. Fuller is the recipient of the Society of Gynecologic Oncologists Foundation Award, the Resident Teaching Award from Massachusetts General Hospital, and the Spirit of Wellness Award from the Wellness Community of Greater Boston.  He has also been awarded visiting professorships at the Mayo Clinic and the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and was named one of the Best Doctors in America by American Health magazine in 1996.

The Community Clinician of the Year Award was established in 1998 by the Massachusetts Medical Society to recognize a physician from each of the Society’s 20 district medical societies who has made significant contributions to his or her patients and the community and who stands out as a leading caregiver. The Middlesex District is comprised of more than 2,000 physicians who live and work in 22 communities in Middlesex County.
