Winchester Co-operative Theater Presents Fame!

Winchester Coop’s Fame Looking Auspicious

99 campers. 20 staff members. One incredibly hard working team.

This year, the Winchester Cooperative Theatre summer program is gearing up to perform the hit musical Fame for their summer showcase. Fame was once a television show but popularized by the Academy-Award winning film featuring Irene Cara singing the hits Fame and Out Here On My Own.  Subsequently, it was adapted into a Broadway musical. The plot centers on a group of high school students that are accepted into the High School for Performing Arts in New York City and their struggles with achieving stardom and finding out who they are amidst a sea of competition and setbacks.

There is never a dull moment at the Co-op; a record setting number of children (almost hitting triple digits) have signed on to be a part of the summer show. Never has such interest and talent been seen in comparison to this year’s group, and the equally record-setting amount of staff members could not be more excited. While some challenges come with hitting maximum capacity, it is incredible to have such a dedicated array of young actors and actresses flocking to the rehearsal eager to practice every day.

The Coop’s summer program runs four weeks long throughout July. The first week includes a smaller show; the middle two weeks include skits which challenge and build the campers’ acting abilities; and in the last week, the whole camp mobilizes for the big show. The summer program is not as rigorous as the fall and spring programs, which allows the kids to develop dynamic acting abilities at an easygoing pace.

The Winchester Cooperative Theatre has been providing children with the opportunity to discover acting at an early age and to make progress as artists. Since its inception in 1979, founder and director Cathy Alexander has shown aspiring actors the skills they need. Winchester Cooperative Theatre has a show in the fall for 6-8th graders and a show in the spring for 4-6th graders as well.

The performance dates for Fame are Thursday and Friday July 24th and 25th at 11:00 AM and 7:30 PM at the Lincoln School auditorium.
