Winchester Youth Attends National Instruments Days, NIDays Conference

Thomas Pinella of Winchester, a senior at Boston College High School and Controls Team Lead of the BC High Robotics Team, on November 5th attended NIDays, a Graphical System Design conference hosted by National Instruments at the Seaport World Trade Center, Boston. Attendees included engineers, scientists, and executives from organizations such as MIT, Harvard, BAE Systems, Analog Devices, and Bose.

Pinella and 7 other members of the BC High Robotics Team, under the mentorship of Peter Rifken and Heather Baker, spent the day attending workshops and product exhibitions, networking with peers and learning about the latest technology and innovations from NI.

The team was among 800 registrants, which included systems engineers, test system developers, test program managers, embedded systems designers, professors, researchers, and students. The students were challenged to engage with academia and industry professionals to understand how engineering is applied in their roles.

Pinella and his teammates were joined by Agawam High School's Team 839 as representatives of FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology, a program developed to promote science and technology to today's youth). Together, they educated engineers and scientists on the impact of the FIRST Robotics Competition in their lives. Both teams were thrilled their robots were featured alongside Dean Kamen during the closing keynote speech. Kamen is an inventor, engineer, and the founder of FIRST.
