Artists and Artisans Turn Winchester Common into Art Space

The 13th annual Art in August Festival brings its creativity and excitement to outdoor market.

Winchester's program is up and running at over 20 downtown venues for another season that evokes artistic imaginations and celebrates local talent.

In the first of three events sponsored this month by the Winchester Cultural Council and the ENKA Society, the will take center stage at the on Saturday, August 6 from 9:30-4:30 p.m. rain or shine.

Approximately 16 vendors will display their creations -- from photography and painting to sterling silver jewelry and silk scarves. Buyers and browsers will be treated to a variety of different media and handmade wares.

The live music of Gil Graham and Friends will entertain those who come to browse and listen.

The entire Art in August program is the effort of the Downtown Business Association. Through the support of their participating businesses the program is free and open to all who share an interest in artistic creation and those who shape it.

Former Chair of the Winchester Cultural Council (WCC) Don Daniel is one of a team of residents working to maintain and expand this summer signature series of events and showings.

"We want our artists and neighbors to come together in a quintessential celebration of the enduring wonder of artistic expression," explained Daniel.

Recently designated Chair of WCC, Debbie Taylor-Smith said that the fair on Saturday is an add-on to the list of activities usually sponsored throughout the month.

"We're delighted to be able to grow our August events," said Taylor-Smith. "There is a broad range of fine art offerings and unique professional crafts. We're showcasing them in this way for the first time."
