A Little Bit of Paradise at Salone Estetica

In a salon and day spa that treats you like family services and equipment are state-of-the art.

To move from Calabria, Italy to the greater Boston area is an adjustment, particularly for a girl of 14. But Maria Pintone Taliaferro had a vision that guided her. She wanted to help people feel their best so they could be their best.

It wasn't long after settling in Somerville with her family before Taliaferro began to study hairdressing. She eventually chose to apprentice with noted stylist John Dellaria. When she opened in 1978 she dedicated herself to expertise in cutting and color.

"It was a challenge to go out on my own," said Taliaferro. "But I aimed to be good at what I did and believed my services would please clients."

The mother of two has been part of the revolution in services that have developed in the industry in the last couple of decades. According to Taliaferro, both the salon and the day spa are commited to the highest quality in a comfortable atmosphere with a well-trained staff sensitive to the client's needs.

"Clients have so much they can do to look and feel their best," says Janet Alberich, Director of Marketing. "There are a number of hair treatments, color options, make up services and an extensive spa menu geared to the client's preferences. From head to toe there is a healthy way to indulge yourself."

The salon uses Aveda all-natural products believing that hair and skin thrive best with the use of botanically based cosmetics rather than chemical compositions.

As diverse as the salon and spa have become, Taliaferro remains a hands-on proprietor, keeping a full book of appointments and training new hires. By doing so she ensures quality control in a seemless delivery of services to each client every time.

Valentina Taliaferro has worked with her mother managing schedules and appointments as well as being one of the first faces to welcome clients for six years.

"It's a professional atmosphere here," explained the younger Taliaferro. "But it's more than that. It's personable. We have a lot of regular customers we've known for years. They become part of the salon. We have new clients who feel that atmosphere from the time of their first visit. It's like a second home."

Salone Estetica uses Aveda Hair Color which is 97 percent naturally derived. According to Taliaferro, these innovative formulas leave hair essentially damage-free – infused with conditioning plant oils for shinier, healthy-looking color.

Stylists at the salon are able to create color that is customized for each client. Highlights or lowlights, panels or weaves the salon takes pridein giving every client a look created just for them.

Taliaferro said that the salon has a full service spa with services ranging from facials, waxing, massage and hand and foot care. Their manicures and pedicures are designed to help their clients relax as well as receive beautiful natural nails and soft callus-free feet with an array of polishes to choose from.

According to Taliaferro, the most popular nail treatment is their Shellac two week manicure that she said does not chip, fade or damage your nails. Because Shellac nails are cured, they dry immediately with no chance of smudging.
