Today is Monday, Aug. 30. Here are five things you need to know:

  1. More sunny weather is in store for Winchester today with a high of 80 forecasted. Tonight will find clear skies with an overnight low of 59.
  2. Today is the first day of school for Winchester Public Schools students. Despite Tropical Storm Irene, teachers reported to work yesterday and classes will begin on time. Be sure to check back with Patch for a photo gallery and be sure to submit your own photos of your kids heading off to school.
  3. An will be held for Sachiko Furui at the Winchester Public Library today from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.
  4. Lexington Historical Society at 10 a.m. this morning. Tour historic homes and see the film “First Shot!”
  5. Pop singer Christopher Cross scores a number one single with his song “Sailing” on this day in 1980. Cross would follow up this success in later years with songs like “Arthur’s Theme” and “Think of Laura” before largely disappearing from the Billboard charts.
