2. Today is the first day of school for Winchester Public Schools students. Despite Tropical Storm Irene, teachers reported to work yesterday and classes will begin on time. 4. Lexington Historical Society at 10 a.m. this morning. Tour historic homes and see the film “First Shot!”
5. Pop singer Christopher Cross scores a number one single with his song “Sailing” on this day in 1980. Cross would follow up this success in later years with songs like “Arthur’s Theme” and “Think of Laura” before largely disappearing from the Billboard charts.
