Five Things You Need To Know Today, March 3

Today is Thursday, March 3. Here are five things you need to know:

  1. Winter is Back: If you didn’t leave your house last night, then you don’t know that the temperature dropped and winter has returned. According to the National Weather Service, the high for Thursday is expected to be 20 degrees. The wind chill is expected to be -7 with gusts up to 30 mph. By Thursday night though, the wind should calm down, by the temperature will drop into the single digits, hovering around seven degrees.
  2. Winchester’s Outstanding Citizen of the Year: The Winchester Chamber of Commerce's Board of Directors is seeking nominations from the community of qualified candidates for the award. For the past 31 years, the has chosen to hwho has made a through his or her work to the improvement of the business community or to the overall quality of life in Winchester. In May there will be a gala event to honor the person selected. The recipient's name will be announced at the Annual General Meeting of the Winchester Chamber of Commerce in April 2011. 
  3. Community Service Scholarships: The Rotary Club of Winchester is accepting . Applicants must be a Winchester resident, graduating in 2011 from an accredited public, private, parochial, vocational or charter high school and have been accepted to an accredited institution of higher education or accredited vocational training program. They must be able to demonstrate that they have reached out to others through community service or through promotion of world peace through international cooperation and understanding.
  4. John Travers: Winchester Firefighter, John Travers, without a license and possession of ammunition without a license on Friday, Feb. 11. One of those weapons was used to commit a crime in Boston. Since his arrest, Travers has been on paid administrative leave pending a hearing, which is scheduled for today. A decision on Travers’ future is expected to be made by Monday.  
  5. Show at Lucia’s: The will be stopping by tonight at 8 p.m. to perform for the Winchester crowd. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the band will perform from 8 p.m. to 11p.m. In the past two years the James Montgomery Band has opened for opening for Aerosmith, B.B. King and Little Feat, among others.
