Today is Thursday, September 8. Here are five things you need to know:

  1. Rain finally leaves: Expect a similar day today from what you saw on Wednesday, but the rain will be moving out by the afternoon. According to the National Weather Service, the high for Thursday will be 68 degrees. There should be showers throughout the day on Thursday, but they should be finally tapering off around 4 p.m.
  2. Solarize Now: Alteris Renewables and the Solarize Mass team will have a Solar House at There will be programs for the public at 2:20, 2:45 and from 7 p.m. on.in the high school starting at 7:30 p.m. In the auditorium there will be a short presentation plus stations for getting your solar questions answered. To find out if your roof might be a good candidate for solar, bring your power bill and come to Solarize Now. You can look at a satellite image of your residence along with Alteris experts who will assess your roof on the spot. Already had your home assessed for solar and still have questions?  Experts will be on hand to  provide answers.
  3. EnKa Grants: The from organizations serving the needs of Winchester residents. The deadline for applications is October 1. A project budget and organization financial statement must be included with the requests for funding. Contact Nancy Hicke, EnKa Gifts Committee Chair, at 66 Oxford Street, Winchester, MA 01890 (781) 729-1892 with questions or to obtain an application form. Grant applications are also available via the web at www.enkasociety.org .
  4. Aberjona River: Parking along the western side of Mystic Valley Parkway between Waterfield Road and Manchester Road will be prohibited  Portions of the sidewalk on the west side of Mystic Valley Parkway will be closed during construction. The eastern half of the Aberjona parking lot will be closed during the first phase of the project. The access road between the Aberjona parking lot and Ginn Field will be closed for the duration of the project.  All access to the playfields should be from Bacon Street.
