Flood Watch in Effect for Friday

Rain, combined with melting snow, may cause flooding conditions, according to the National Weather Service

The National Weather Service has issued a flood watch for eastern Massachusetts, northern Connecticut and Rhode Island  in anticipation of a mix of snow and rain that  is set to hit the area tomorrow. The watch is in effect from Friday morning to Friday evening.

According to the advisory, a mix of snow and rain is expected to begin this evening and will change to rain around daybreak. The rain will become heavy at times Friday morning and last through mid-afternoon before tapering off in the evening.

The National Weather Service said one to two inches of precipitation is expected for the region. Temperatures are expected to be in the 40s to lower 50s, however, and the snow-melt from the warmer temperatures combined with increasing winds increases the risk of flooding.

"Urban and poor drainage flooding can be expected with heavy rainfall and near some snow-and-ice-clogged drains," the advisory states. "In addition, the combination of heavy rainfall and melting snow will cause some smaller streams to rise near bankful."

In addition to the flood watch, a high wind advisory will go into effect tomorrow evening and last through to late into the night. Wind is expected to howl at 3o to 40 miles per hour, with gusts up to 60 miles per hour.
