Goat Spotted Wandering Around Winchester

The animal was rescued along South Border Road.

A very cold and hungry goat is resting (and eating) comfortably at the MSPCA-Angell after a passerby driving along a busy street in Winchester came to his aid on Thursday night.

The goat was found walking along South Border Road when the driver, worried about the goat’s ability to safely avoid traffic, picked him up and rushed him to the MSPCA-Angell. The goat is thin and suffering from nasal discharge as well as a cough.  Dr. Lauren Baker of the Angell Animal Medical Center is tending to his care and will administer medication should she determine he is suffering from a respiratory infection.

The MSPCA-Angell has named the unexpected arrival “Meow” as a salute to this weekend’s fee-waived adult cat Adoptathon, according to Rob Halpin of the MSPCA.

“We’re very thankful to the good Samaritan who came to the aid of this goat, and we hope we can identify his owner soon,” said Amanda Kennedy, Director of the Boston Animal Adoption Center at the MSPCA-Angell.  “If we are unable to find his owners we will address any medical issues he may have and, if necessary, will bring him to the MSPCA-Nevins Farm where he can commune with the many rescued farm animals who currently live there while waiting for a home.”

The MSPCA-Angell believes Meow is between three and five years old. The MSPCA-Nevins Farm Barn Manager, Melissa Ghareeb, is contacting the Department of Agriculture to determine whether Meow can be properly identified via his ID tag.

Added Kennedy: “We suspect Meow probably didn’t belong in Winchester as the town is not zoned for farm animals. Nearby Concord, however, is appropriately zoned so it’s possible that he wandered from Concord to Winchester—and if that’s the case he is one very fortunate and well-traveled goat.”

The MSPCA-Angell encourages anyone who may be missing a goat, or who may know who Meow’s owner is, to please contact the Adoption Center at 617-522-5055.
