Slippery Conditions Expected for Tuesday

There's a wintry mix of rain, snow and sleet expected to hit Winchester throughout the day on Tuesday.

It’s not a blizzard this time and it won’t be a foot of snow, but there’s more winter weather expected to hit Massachusetts throughout the day on Tuesday.

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a winter weather advisory for Winchester. The advisory will be in effect from 7 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Tuesday, just in time for the morning and afternoon commute.

“A winter weather advisory is issued when snow and ice is forecast to develop in the affected areas, but accumulations are expected to be light,” the National Weather Service said in a release issued Monday afternoon.

Winchester could get anywhere from two to six inches, although the NWS said that the majority of the snow will hit areas along the New Hampshire border. Sleet and freezing rain is also expected from this storm.

The NWS is predicting that snow will most likely fall between 8 a.m. and 11 a .m. on Tuesday. By late afternoon the snow will change to rain, but in between that time is when the NWS believes Winchester will get sleet and freezing rain.

The roads are expected to become slippery from all the rain and ice, and that, according to Jay Gill, Operations Manager of the, is what makes driving especially difficult.

"The trouble with ice is that you can't see it," Gill said. "You can't go fast over it. People think because they have four-wheel drive it helps, but it doesn't."

The NWS also warns drivers that conditions driving to and from work could be slick.

“Any snow or ice would make driving and walking difficult, but not impossible on untreated roadways and sidewalks,” the NWS said in the statement. “When temperatures are below freezing motorists need to be especially careful on bridges and overpasses where slippery spots can easily develop.”
