Students Cycle Through Winchester

Four college students rode through Winchester trying to raise awareness about the dangers of fossil fuels.

Most college students spend the summer relaxing at home, on vacation or participating in internships. But for 28 college students from the New England Climate Summer program, they decided to bike ride around New England raising awareness about the need for a rapid and responsible transition away from the burning of fossil fuels.

And last week, four of those riders – Ale Dominguez, Eliza Sherpa, Sara Hopps and Sam Burke – showed up in Winchester. During their time in Winchester, they worked closely with Sustainable Winchester, screened the movie Carbon nation and attended the

“It’s great to see that much incentive for people to put solar panels in residential areas,” Hopps said. “It’s an example of how government can give people an opportunity to make the shift in their own lives.

The riders were given $5 a day as they travelled over 600 miles throughout New England. The goal of the ride was to gather information on different strategies communities are using to limit the need for fossil fuels.

It’s something that Sherpa says anyone can do.

“You don’t need to be a pro,” she said. “This is a people’s movement and everyone needs to do it and make it a part of their lives. There’s no more appropriate time than now.”
