This Week in Winchester History: No Heat

Vinson-Owen parents complained about the lack of heat at the elementary school.

1962

Heating Issue

Because of a faulty heating system, parts of the Vinson-Owen school can not be used. Certain classrooms are unable to be heated because of the system.

Some Vinson-Owen parents filed a petition asking the town to fix the problem. The parents argued that it impacts learning to move students out of their regular classrooms and impact instruction because of the heating problem.

Different Insurance

Winchester State Representative Harrison Chadwick sponsored a bill that would allow Winchester to determine its own health insurance for town employees. The representatives overwhelmingly voted it down, 69 to 26, saying that towns should follow the state plan.

Chemistry award

Winchester resident, Eugene Rochow, won the 1961 Perkin Medal, the highest honor in American applied chemistry.

Winchester Ejects

Winchester resident, First Lt. Edward S. Mansfield fo the U.S. Air Force, needed to bail out of his plane -- a disabled F86-Sabre Jet over Spain. His engine stalled while he was flying at 20,000 feet near Zaragosa, Spain.

1987

Found money

The Winchester League of Women Voters found a fund started by Asa Fletcher over 100 years ago. The Winchester resident initially deposited $10,000. The fund has since grown to $47,000. The fund was created to help aid the poor.
