This Week in Winchester History: Resident Heading to Space

One Winchester resident will be making his third trip to space.

Cheaper Calls

The New England Telephone Company has decided to lower its rates from five to three cents for excess calls within eight-mile radius of the subscriber's home.

1962

Tree Pick up

Even though it was icy and raining, the Winchester Jaycees travelled throughout town picking up Christmas trees from residents. In all, 1,100 trees were collected.

Snow Removal

Winchester residents were complaining about the poor condition of the commuter rail station. Some said the area was "very bad", while others said it was "dangerous."

Some commuters have said that it's impossible to get from one end of the platform to the other, there's so much snow and ice. The new owners of the station - the DeVries Supply Company of Arlington - are responsible to remove the snow.

1987

Astronaut

Frederick Hauck, 45, was selected by NASA to command the next shuttle flight. Hauck hwas a Captain in the Navy, following in the foosteps of his father and grandfather, who were both naval officers..

This would be the third trip for Hauck. His first time in space, he went with Sally Ride -- the first woman astronaut. His second mission was the first space salvage operation, where he had to retrieve a pair of errant satellites.

This is the first space shuttle since th Challenger.

Playground

A group of Winchester residents are looking at building a playground at Ginn Field.

Smoking at School

Winchester High School students are allowed to smoke on campus, in designated areas, as long as their parents sign a contract. The students also have to agree to attend mandatory smoking meetings and clean the smoking areas themselves.
