This Week in Winchester History: High School Sports Teams Best in the State

The boys and girls soccer teams both made the championship games, while the football team is one win away from the Super Bowl.

1911

Election Day

Slightly more than 1,100 residents voted in the 1911 gubernatorial election. Frothingham (Republican) gained the majority of the Winchester votes - 778-415 - over his competitor Foss (Democrat).

Winchester residents voted overwhelmingly in support of an ammendment that would allow voting machines to be used at all elections.

1961

Coach of the Year

Henry Knowlton, athletic director, physical education teacher and high school football coach was named "Coach of the Year" by the Association of New England Football Officials.

Stolen Car Chase

Winchester Police Officers, Robert Baird and David Boyle, were involved in a 90 mph car chase that cut through Winchester. 

The 16-year-old Arlington boy stole a car in Arlington center and sped down Cambridge Road. Winchester Police chased him down the road, but lost him over by Oak Grove cemetery.

Medford Police eventually found the teen who stole the 1960 Chevrolet.

1986

More parking

The selectmen are looking into expanding the Jenks Center parking lot. The area expanded would be the green space between the center and the Knights of Columbus Hall.

Sporting Succes

The Winchester High School boys soccer (17-2-2) team advanced to the North Division1 champpionship against North Andover (16-0-4)., while the girls team (16-0-2) also made it to the finals.

And if the football team (8-0) defeats Belmont, it advances to the Super Bowl.
