This Week in Winchester History: Hospital Prepares to Open Doors

Winchester Hospital will begin to accept patients.

Winchester Hospital

The Visiting Nurse Association has been giving patients the best home-nursing experience they could give them for the past 13 years. The association was then asked to "establish and maintain a hospital."

After a $4,000 donation, the hospital is ready to start accepting patients. The nurses are leasing a three-story house on the corner of Washington and Lincoln Street.

Town Elections

Winchester had the largest vote in town history for its local elections. In total, 1,225 people cast their vote -- 43 of them were women. Two years ago, only 950 people voted.

1962

Youth Center

The Winchester Community Youth Center, which was previously affiliated with the Police Athletic Club oepened and is an independent organization. The purpose of the WCYC is similar to the YMCA.

Laundry Theft

Two teens were arrested for stealing from a Winchester laundromat. The two youths stole $70 in change from the coin-o-matic.

1987

Tannery Development

Town officials expressed concern over a proposed 72-unit development along Cross Street. The site was a former home to a tanning business, and the sludge could be toxic.
