This Week in Winchester History: Schools Deal with Party Problems

According to the police, 70 percent of junior high students in 1986 experienced sex, drugs or alcohol.

The National Order of Daughters of Santa Maria held their first costume party. Prizes were given to the most original costumes. The winner dressed up as a butterfly.

House of Correction

Two Winchester teens were sent to the Billerica House of Correction after they were found guilty of breaking and entering with intent to commit larceny from a building and malicious damage to a school house.

The two teens were picked up in front of the Lynch School. They were carrying a crowbar and a pick axe.

Parking Problem

Because of complaints of a traffic hazard by Winchester Hospital, Police Chief, Joseph Derro, ordered a "no parking" restriction in effect on the west side of Highland Avenue, between Fairmount Street and Maple Road. Traffic has been so bad in the area that fire trucks and ambulances have not been able to get by.

World Opera

William Davies, IV, was invited to play solo trombone in the orchestra of an opera. Davies started his musical career in the school band at the Mystic School.

1986

Sex, Drugs and Alcohol

According to the School Committee, 70 percent of its junior high students have experiences sex, drugs or alcohol. 

"What kids were experiencing in high school a few years ago, junior high kids are experiencing now," youth officer Daniel McGhee told the Star at the time. "That includes, sex, drugs and alcohol."

McGhee told that committee that they can't babysit the students, and that parents would be charged if they supply alcohol to minors.

County no more

On Election day, Winchester voters, along with all voters in Middlesex County would decide what to do with Middlesex County. If they want to leave it as is, or vote to eliminate its offices as a county.
