This Week in Winchester History: Smoking Ban and a New Planet

The School Committee debated in 1986, whether or not they should ban students from smoking on school grounds.

Stove Fire

The Winchester Fire Department were called to a fire in a home on the corner of Forest and Washington Street. The fire was caued by an oil stove exploding.

No one was injured in the blast.

New planet

Rev. Joel Metcalf believed he observed a new planet from his observatory. If his finding proves to be a new planet, Metcalf was going to name it Winchester.

1961

Playground

The South Border Road Corporation received $25,000 from the town for a 1.6 acre lot of land on Dennett Road, which the town will use as a playground.

1986

Smoking Ban

The school committee will decide whether to allow smoking the courtyard of Winchester High School.

I think we're ducking the issue," said member Edward O'Connell to the Star at the time. "There is a tide swell in the country. I think it's a serious issue."

In 1986, the house of representatives, by a vote of 87-60, defeated a bill that would have prohibited public school students from smoking anywhere on school grounds.
