Fishing Decision Overturned

A Fourth District Court of Eastern Massachusetts judge ruled that a Winchester man, Arthur E. Whitney, was not violating the law when he went fishing in the North Reservoir.

The judge overturned a previous decision against Whitney, as he said that only the town of Winchester could govern fishing in the reservoir, not the state, which initially accused Whitney.

1961

Fire at Chapin School

A two-alarm fire caused more than $25,000 worth of damage to the east wing of the old Chapin School building on Swanton Street.

The school, which was built in 1876, was the “very embodiment of the old-time grammar school,” according to the article.

“Spenser: For Hire” Brought Hollywood to Town

More than 500 people packed downtown Winchester to see “Spenser: For Hire” stars Robert Urich and Avery Brooks film the TV mystery show at C&G Restaurant.
