Winchester Asks Residents to Clear Storm Drains for Hurricane Sandy

With the anticipation of Hurricane Sandy hitting Massachusetts early next week, Winchester asks for help from residents.

The Town of Winchester is requesting that residents work with their neighbors to clear storm drains in front of their property and along their roadway.

Hurricane Sandy could be bringing heavy rains and high winds.

"The Department of Public Works has multiple crews out clearing the storm drains on a daily basis," said LeeAnn Fleming McGahan of the DPW, "However, the trees have been dropping the fall foliage quickly which makes it impossible to clear all drains by Sunday evening."

Town leaders are asking residents to check the storm drains, rake leaves away from the drain (not into the drain) and dispose of the leaves and debris in yard waste bins or brown paper leaf bags.

There are more than 2,000 storm drains and catch basins in Winchester.

McGahan said to not remove the storm grates.

Street sweepers cannot pick up large piles of leaves, and residents are never to rake or blow leaves from their property into the street.

"Your cooperation is greatly appreciated in preparing for Hurricane Sandy," McGahan said.
