Winchester Prepares for 9/11 Ceremony

The Winchester Interfaith Council will be holding a memorial ceremony this Sunday on the Town Common at 2 p.m.

This Sunday will mark the 10-year anniversary of the attacks on September 11, 2001.

In honor of those who have been impacted by the events of that day, the Winchester Interfaith Council will be hosting a multi-faith service marking the anniversary.

“On the morning of September 11, 2001, four coordinated acts of terror took thousands of lives in New York, Virginia and Pennsylvania. In the past 10 years we have grieved, we have rallied, we have seen the best and the worst of the human spirit,” said Reverend Don Remick of the

“The service will be very respectful and reflect different faiths, traditions and those that are not aligned with any faiths,” Remick said.

According to Remick, there will be an opening greeting, followed by some poetry, speakers and two readings from scripture.

At the end of the service the church bells will ring for all the different groups impacted by Sep. 11 – firefighters, police officers, Port Authority, civilians that lost their lives, troops and emergency responders.

After each group is mentioned, there will be a moment of silence, which will be followed by a candle lighting ceremony, Remick said.

“We want to pay respect to those who died and for those that worked in the aftermath,” Remick said. “We’re much more aware of what’s changed in the world because of 9/11. We’re still in that world. Much of what’s happening in the world we can trace to 9/11. People are clearly still grieving.

“I hope this can be a place of healing. And we’ll do that with humility, compassion, justice and honesty.”
