Winchester Rotary to Host Oktoberfest

The Rotary Club of Winchester's Fourth Annual Oktoberfest will be held on Saturday, Sept. 24 at Winchester Town Hall. Tickets for the fundraising event are on sale now.

Break out your lederhosen and get ready to sample some brews.  The Rotary Club of Winchester is gearing up to host their Fourth Annual Oktoberfest celebration on Saturday, Sept. 24. What better way to welcome the fall than with a boisterous Bavarian extravaganza?

“This is an event for the whole community,” Rotary Club of Winchester President Carla Suijkerbuijk. “It’s also great PR for rotary and shows people what a service club this really is.”

Last year almost 400 people showed up for the festivities, and the rotary club is expecting another big turnout for 2011. This year’s event will mirror the Munich celebration, as Sept. 24 is the official start of Oktoberfest in Germany.

“I think everyone is really excited,“ said Suijkerbuijk. "It’s a great chance to see your friends, drink beer, have some great food and listen to live German music.”

The original Oktoberfest is a 16-18 day event that takes place in Munich, Germany from late September to the first weekend in October. It’s the largest fair in the world. The Winchester incarnation, while on a smaller scale than the German festivities, requires the collaboration of the Winchester Rotary Club, the Town of Winchester, and a lot of generous neighborhood businesses.

The event is a community undertaking, with a number of charitable local sponsors stepping up to lend a hand. The Boston Beer Company will be providing its Sam Adams beer, and Pairings Wine and Food will be providing the wine. The authentic German fare will be courtesy of Karl’s Sausage Kitchen in Saugus, MA. Live music will be provided by the Jolly Kopperschmidts German Band.

Salter Healthcare and Quinn Group Insurance Agency of Winchester have each outlaid a significant financial donation to the event. Their generosity will allow the Rotary Club to direct a significant portion of the admission price right back toward the Winchester community.

“We are very, very thankful to all of our sponsors,” Suijkerbuijk said. “With all of the help, it really should be a great event on the 24th."

The Winchester Rotary Oktoberfest event will be held on Saturday, Sept. 24 from 6-10 p.m. at Winchester Town Hall. Tickets for the event are $30 for adults and $10 for children. Tickets can be purchased at Book Ends in downtown Winchester, at the Winchester Famers Market and at the Transfer Station. Tickets will also be available at the door.
