Dr. Albert Muggia speaks about Margaret Sanger, Founder of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America

Many of you enjoyed Dr. Albert Muggia's excellent program on Mark Twain last year.  He knows a great deal about many people and the subject chosen by  most of you for this year's talk is Margaret Sanger (1883-1966) founder of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America.

Margaret Sanger was a poor Irish girl growing up in Corning, NY who had a very miserable childhood before becoming a nurse, caring for poor women in New York City.  She saw so much misery that she felt she had to do something about it.  She originated the term "birth control" and devoted her entire life to the idea of Family Planning, in spite of how difficult the road was.  She even went to prison for her beliefs.  Her own personal life and children were not as important to her as her cause.  She traveled all over the world, wrote many books and had a worldwide impact.

This program is presented by the Education Committee of the Winchester Seniors Association and is supported by a grant from the John and Mary Murphy Educational Foundation.  Coffee and cookies will be available at 10:00 a.m.

About the Speaker: Albert Muggia was born in Italy and grew up in Ecuador attending a bilingual school, came to New England to attend Harvard University and Yale Medical School. Dr. Muggia practiced medicine in Winchester and Medford for 40 years, and was on the faculty at Tufts Medical School.
