Winchester MCAS Scores Remain Strong

Winchester's MCAS scores are very comparable to last year's numbers.

Winchester continues to be one of the , according to the latest round of MCAS (Massachusetts Comprehensive Assesment System) scores released in September.

Across the board, students in the had comparable results to last year.

Ninety percent of Winchester students scored proficient or higher in English Language Arts on the 2011 MCAS, the same number as last year.

In math, Winchester students remained comparable to last year’s scores as 83 percent of students scored proficient or higher, down one percent from the previous year, while the state also saw a decrease of one percent  (58 to 57).

Last year, Winchester 10th graders had 97 percent of its students test proficient or higher on the ELA Exam, while 96 percent received the same marks this year. But again, Winchester outpaced the state in that category, as 67 percent of students in the Commonwealth tested proficient or higher.

After having one percent of students in the warning or failing category, a year ago, Winchester saw that number increase to two percent in the ELA Exam, and three percent in the math exam; last year only two percent of students in the district fell into that category. But again, Winchester’s numbers are better than the state. Eight percent of students in the Commonwealth are in that category for the ELA exam, while that number increases to 15 percent for the math exam.

Winchester saw its greatest increase on the seventh grade ELA exam. Last year, 93 percent of its students tested proficient or higher, this year that number increased to 96 percent.
