Lincoln School Welcomes Spring With STEM

The STEM Celebration at Lincoln Elementary School took place on March 21.

Lincoln Elementary School welcomed spring on March 21 in an entirely new fashion this year, a STEM celebration. STEM, which stands for science, technology, engineering and math, held up its end of the bargain even though the weather outside wasn't quite as cooperative.

"If only I had thought about tin foil and pennies I could have saved a lot on Christmas and birthday presents," said Michele St. Laurent, a volunteer at Math Mania: A STEM Celebration, referring to a boat building challenge, one of twenty interactive stations at the event. Kids at that station were encouraged to build boats, float them in water and test their load capacity with pennies. Young mariners quickly figured out the relationship between hull design and splash potential for penny loads.

Lincoln Elementary School's parent association, the LSPA, sponsored the event with the assistance from volunteers from McCall Middle School, Winchester High School, BU graduate programs in biochemistry, Winchester Public Library, the Friends of the Fells, Winchester DPW and many others. The evening featured age-appropriate activities for both children and their parents to enjoy.
