Meals on Wheels Helping Winchester Residents

For three decades the meals on wheels program has been delivering food to Winchester residents.

For over 30 years the Winchester Meals on Wheels program has been serving food to Winchester residents.

“We try and meet the needs of citizens who need or want to stay in their homes and be independent, but can’t get out of their home,” said Marie Johnson, Secretary of the Winchester chapter. “We’re able to provide people with healthy food.”

The non-profit organization has been providing home-delivered meals to anyone unable to shop or prepare food. The Board of Selectmen recently invited some of the participants of the program in to thank them for their service.

“It’s a great civic thing to do,” said Selectman Doug Marmon. “It’s a real way to bring the community together.”

“It’s an excellent opportunity for people that need some assistance,” said Selectman Jim Johnson. “It brings meals to someone’s house, but also it brings someone for a daily check up. This doesn’t get much praise for all the work you do.”

According to Mary Ann Crocket, one of the drivers for the program, she’s on the road five days a week delivering food. The meals, which are all made at Winchester Hospital, are picked up by the drivers and taken to the residents.

“Every house I stop at I’m welcomed with a great big smile,” Crocket said. “The recipients are just excited to see and chat with us, and that’s the part that enriches my life. They have stories to tell and we have wonderful exchanges. You really get to know the people.”

Crocket said it takes about 90 minutes to go through her route and deliver all the food.

“It’s a wonderful service for this community,” Crocket said.

According to the program’s chairman, Jan Dolan, it costs a resident $3.75 for a hot meal, and financial aid is available for those who need it.

Dolan said that the program relies on the support of the Winchester churches, banks, civic organizations and volunteers.

“It’s really a community effort,” Dolan said.
