Winchester Boys Soccer Manhandles Reading, 5-1
The Boston Globe advertised Thursday's soccer game between Winchester and Reading as one of the games of the week.  Last time they played, Reading twice had the lead, but Winchester came back to score the winning goal in the 2nd half and held on to win 3-2.  Since then, Reading has been on a tear, undefeated in its last 7 games.

So we expected a tense game today, but Winchester scored in the first 5 minutes and led 3-0 at the half, then scored again in the opening minutes of the second half.  Most of Winchester’s starters sat out the rest of the second half to give some JV players a chance to get some varsity experience.  Even so, Winchester continued to control the game.
Each team scored on a penalty kick in the second half and Winchester improved its record to 10 wins, 0 losses, and 2 ties.

Winchester first goal was on a cross from Marino Espiga to Zach Samson at 4:30.  Samson bounced a shot off the goal post at 12:30, and Nick Stern put the rebound into the net. Zach Landau scored Winchester’s third goal at 34:30 on a slow roller past the keeper.

In the second half Samson got his second goal of the game off a nice pass from John Downs. Espiga scored Winchester’s last goal on a beautifully placed penalty kick at 50 minutes.
