Chief Nash Weighs in on 'Red Flag' Warning

Residents of Winchester are encouraged to remain vigilant during the "Red Flag" Fire Warning

The National Weather Service in Taunton issued a “Red Flag” warning for most of Southern New England on April 3. This warning is still in effect given the dry weather experienced this winter and this spring combined with the current low humidity levels in the area.

“A Red Flag warning means that critical fire conditions are in effect. The combination of low humidity and strong winds elevate the chances of a fast spreading fire,” Chief John Nash said. “All outdoor fire permits have been suspended.” Residents in Winchester can usually burn yard waste with a permit before May 1.

“Depending on the wind, fires can spread as fast as 30 feet per minute in the conditions we are experiencing,” Nash said. “The fire warden issued us a warning saying that flame lengths of six to 10 feet can be expected in low shrub, tall grass areas if they were to catch.”

Chief Nash said a brush fire broke out at Winning Farm on Monday and was not fully put down until Tuesday. “Some brush caught fire on the surface and the roots of trees caught fire underground. Situations like these take a lot of water and a lot of work," he said.

Chief Nash said the major step residents can take is to maintain vigilance if they live near wooded areas.
