The National Weather Service has placed Winchester, and much of Massachusetts and Connecticut and all of Rhode Island under a "red flag warning" today due to an increase in the likelihood of fires caused by wind and dry weather.
The NWS warning states that the combination of strong winds and low relative humidity and temperatures in the high 50s will create an elevated fire spread potential in the area.
The red flag warning will be in effect from 10 a.m. this morning until 8 p.m. this evening. With sustained west winds of 15 to 25 miles per hour, and gusts up to 40 mph, the NWS states that any fires that develop will have the potential to spread rapidly.
Outdoor burning is not recommended, the warning states.
