State Police are investigating a Monday morning crash in Methuen that killed the former Winchester Town Treasurer.
According to preliminary investigation reports, David P. McGurl, 57, of Arlington was driving southbound on Route 93 in Methuen at about 9:56 a.m., when he veered off to the right side of the road. McGurl’s Cadillac collided with the rear of a tractor-trailer parked in a cutout of the roadway, to the right of the breakdown lane, according to State Police.
McGurl was pronounced dead at the scene. The reason why he veered off the road remains under investigation, police said.
McGurl was hired as a Assistant Treasurer for Winchester on February 5, 2002. He was later appointed to the position of Treasurer/Collector for the town on March 15, 2004. His last day with Winchester was on May 9, 2008.
"We were all very disappointed to hear the news about David," said Winchester Assistant Town Manager, Mark Twogood. "He was liked by everyone who he worked with and who came in contact with him. He was a professional, had a good sense of humor, a great guy and a good family man."
"I knew him well," Twogood continued. "I worked closely with him. I was very, very sad to hear the news. My heart goes out to his family. It's just a terrible accident."
