Mortimer to Pay State with IRA Accounts

Thomas Mortimer, IV, was back in court on Tuesday to discuss his financial situation and set a new court date.

The state got one step closer to attaining the finances of Thomas Mortimer, IV, on Tuesday.

Mortimer, who was in the courthouse, but not present in the courtroom, was given access to his various IRA accounts. According to his defense attorney, Denise Regan, it was difficult to attain access to those accounts since Mortimer is in jail and without a driver's license.

Mortimer's financial history came into question during a when Judge Julia Kern learned that Mortimer had more than the $2,000 he had previously told the court.

Judge Kern found out that Mortimer informed the probation officer of a joint account he had with his wife, Laura Stone Mortimer for $11,000. He also owns two cars, one of which is a Toyota Highlander and he has his children's college savings account worth $25,000.

The court ruled that Mortimer is partially indigent and should be able to pay some money to the state.

The trial will begin again on Feb. 1 with a status conference and then that will be followed up with a filing date on Feb. 15. Mortimer won't be back in court until a March 9 hearing date that will be focused on discovery motions.

Mortimer is on trial for murdering his wife, 41-year-old Laura Stone Mortimer, her two children, 2-year-old Charlotte Mortimer and 4-year-old Thomas Mortimer V, and Laura's mother, 64-year-old Ragna Ellen Stone, change.
