News Nearby: 2 Prisoners Escape; Manhole Explosion

Around 7:17 a.m. Monday morning, two prisoners being held before their arraignment escaped from the  holding facility, police said. The two prisoners, originally arrested on Saturday on charges of heroin possession, "were able to take advantage of a breach in the locking mechanism of the holding cell door that allowed them to escape," police said in a recent press release. Around 9 a.m., the two prisoners were located and placed back in custody.

A local surveillance video captured a small manhole explosion near Malden Center Wednesday afternoon, with the lid briefly popping off into the air from the force of the blast. Malden Fire and National Grid representatives are on scene for an investigation, though no injuries were reported. Local businesses have not been affected, a city official said.

An Everett woman is returning to Lawrence District Court on Oct. 11 in connection with a disturbing incident involving psychedelic drugs and biting flesh. Amanda Norcia is being charged with trespassing and possession of a class A substance -- heroin, and will be returning to Lawrence District Court on Oct. 11. But the more serious charges are connected with the woman's boyfriend who, in addition to resisting arrest, had allegedly bit Norcia in the face while they were on LSD in a wooded conservation area in Andover on Aug. 9. Brendan Gibson, 24, of North Andover, is facing assault and battery on a household member, resisting arrest, trespassing and possession of a class A substance, heroin.

Alewife Station in Cambridge was temporarily closed due to police activity, about 1:20 p.m. Wednesday as police investigated a suspicious package found on a Red Line train. The scene was cleared and service resumed later that afternoon.
