Police Log: Bikes Stolen and Falling Asleep at the Wheel

This is an excerpt from the Winchester Police Log from Wednesday, March 9 to Monday, March 14.

Thursday, March 10, 8:30 a.m. –  A Woodside Road resident called police to inform them that someone had broken into their garage. The man told police that only one of the five bikes in the garage was stolen – a green men’s Columbia, 18-speed Mountain Bike worth $400. The garage does not have a lock, and is not attached to the house.

9:24 a.m. – An environmental technician, who works at the Gage Station by the Aberjona River, near the footbridge leading to Ginn Field, reported that there have been acts of vandalism at the rear of the station. The man said that youths have been congregating at the station and that there have been cigarette butts on the ground and graffiti spray-painted on the wall. The man also showed police where pieces of the wall have been chipped away. The man asked police to more frequently patrol the area.

5:38 p.m. – An employee at the Gables called police to inform them that someone had stolen her Coach bag from the front seat of her car. The woman said that she parked in the parking lot, but forgot to lock her doors. She said she put a coat over the bag. The area where she parked had no video surveillance.

The suspect was alleged to have tried to use the woman’s credit cards to pay for gas and withdraw money at Nick’s Mobil in Burlington. The Winchester Police are waiting to inspect the surveillance cameras at the station.  

Friday, March 11, 9:17 a.m. – A Canterbury Road resident received a phone call from a man who was speaking broken English. The man said that he had some papers of hers and wanted to give them back. The woman was concerned because her phone number is unlisted.

After further inspection, the man calling was an employee of TGI Fridays and found a backpack that had papers with the woman’s personal information on them. The man was calling to return the information.

4:29 p.m. – Winchester Police were called to Washington Street, responding to a one-car accident. The vehicle – a black 2005 Toyota Tundra – was located in the woods. The man, a Wilmington resident, informed police that, while driving he fell asleep at the wheel and drove off the road.

No one was injured and police towed his vehicle.

5:20 p.m. – A Cabot Street resident called police to inform them that her son’s Mountain bike – valued at $100 – was stolen. The woman said that it was in the garage, which does not lock.

Saturday, March 12, 1:24 p.m. – A sick skunk was located along Sargent Road and the Winchester Police exterminated the animal.

Sunday, March 13, 5:20 p.m. – A Winchester cruiser crashed into a fire hydrant as it was pulling in to a driveway to take a report of a hit-and-run. It did not appear that the hydrant suffered any damage.

4:57 p.m. – While backing out of a parking space, an Arlington resident crashed into another vehicle. The car stopped for a second and then drove away. Winchester Police were able to track down the vehicle and cited the man for leaving the scene of an accident.

The man said that he wasn’t sure if he struck the vehicle, and cited personal problems for the accident. There was no major damage to either vehicle.
