Police Log: Possible Break-in and Drunk Driver Caught with a Fake License

This is an excerpt from the Winchester Police log from Sunday, July 18 through Wednesday, July 21.

July 18, 9:25 p.m. - Winchester police responded to a caller on Cambridge Street who noticed a car moving erratically along the street. Police tailed the car and as it began to swerve, the officer signaled the car to pull off the road.

According to the report, as the officer approached the car, he smelled vomit and noticed there was vomit on the passenger side floor. The driver also smelt of alcohol. The driver gave the officer his license, which turned out to be fake. When asked how many drinks the man had, he replied, "Um, two, ah two." The officer then proceeded to give him a sobriety test. After failing to follow a pen with his eyes, the officer decided that the driver was too drunk and "administering further tests could jeopardize his safety." On further inspection of the car, the police also found a bag of marijuana mixed in with the vomit.

The man, later identified as Joao Lima, was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, negligent operation of a motor vehicle and a marked lanes violation.

July 18, 11:19 p.m. - Winchester Police received a call reporting an assault on Dunham Street. According to the report, a man in a dump truck with a hydrolic bed and double rear wheels pulled alongside the victim as he walked home from work. The man jumped out of his car and threw the victim, who he mistakenly kept calling "Lee," into the bushes and accused him of stealing his wallet. When the victim's father came outside the house, the man, who is described as being 5-10, white, with dark, thinning hair and a scruffy face or beard, jumped back into his truck and sped away.

July 19, 9:04 p.m. - A Jefferson Road couple called police regarding a possible break-in at their home. The homeowners, who spend their summers in Cape Cod, returned home for a few days and noticed that the window in the cellar was open and the screen over it cut. Police didn't believe the house was broken into, as nothing was missing and it would have been very difficult to enter the house through the narrow cellar window.

The homeowners did point out that last week another home on Jefferson Road was also broken into. Officers lifted two sets of prints from the window and are looking into the situation.

July 20, 12:30 p.m. - Winchester police responded to 5 Graystone Circle, where an employee of Tango Plumbing was reportedly trespassing and causing a disturbance among the construction workers, while construction was being done on the site.

The owner of the construction company stated that the company terminated Tango Plumbing's contract because of an ongoing contract dispute. They then had a no trespassing notice sent to Tango Plumbing ordering all of its employees to stay away. The employee went to the site to see who the new plumber was. He had no knowledge of the no trespassing order and agreed not to return.

July 20, 8:48 p.m. - A woman on Highland Avenue called police in regards to a missing person. An elderly man had gone out for a walk around 7:30 p.m., and was missing for about an hour. The worry was that the man mistakenly wondered into the Middlesex Fells Reservation. Shortly after a Be On the Look Out (BOLO) was issued, the Winchester Police received a call that the man had returned home.
