Police Log: Vandalism and Theft Continue Around Town

This is an excerpt of the Winchester Police Log from Friday, August 6 through Monday, August 9.

Friday, August 6, 5:34 p.m. – Winchester Police took a report of credit card fraud in the lobby of the department. The resident claimed that a Macy's card he hadn't used in a couple of years and that he had since cancelled was used to make purchases at the Burlington Mall.

The victim received a bill from Macy's totaling more than $10,000. The majority of the purchases were for regular, every day items, including a box spring, Kelly's Roast Beef, Legal Seafoods, Best Buy and to pay off cable and electric bills. When the resident asked Macy's fraud department how someone could open up an account in his name, they had no answer.

Friday, August 6, 6:47 p.m. – Police arrived at the Winchester Station Parking Lot off of Waterfield Road where a driver informed police his car, a 2003 Subaru Wagon had been vandalized. The motor vehicle was off parked in a secluded spot adjacent to the train depot. The passenger window of the car was broken. However, it does not appear that anything has been stolen from his car.

Friday, August 6, 8:59 p.m. – The Winchester Police were called to Highland Avenue where a woman informed the police she was a victim of phone fraud. She told the officer that a man who called himself "Mr. Carr" had called her and said he was from UPS. He told her that he had a check for her for $550,000 and has been trying to deliver it for her. They gave her a tracking number and stated that the check was from Global International INS Company.

The caller then began to ask her personal questions, including, if she is an American citizen. The officer called back the number that appeared on the called ID and received no answer. When they called UPS, they informed the police that the tracking number and phone number did not belong to them.

Saturday, August 7, 9:49 a.m. – The police arrived at Mystic Valley Parkway where a woman informed police that she received a suspicious phone call. She received a message from an Investigator Johnson who needed to speak to the homeowner. Johnson informed the woman that she was calling in regards to a Ford Focus, something the homeowner knew nothing about. When the two spoke, the investigator asked the woman specific questions – her last four digits of her social security number, her middle initial and the year she was born. The woman answered all questions, but when her middle initial did not begin with a "Y" the investigator informed the woman they had reached the wrong person and hung up.

When police reached the investigator she informed the officer that she works for the Ford Motor Credit Company and had contacted the woman to find out if she was the owner of a Focus that was in default. She told police the Mystic Valley resident was the wrong person.

Saturday, August 7, 1:45 p.m. – Police went to Nutile Field where a woman informed the officer that her Vera Bradley Wristlet Waller was stolen. She told police that she has left her car unlocked and windows rolled down. The officer suggested she cancel her credit and debit cards. There were only $13 cash in her wallet.

Saturday, August 7, 11:45 a.m. – Police responded to the Depot Parking Lot along Church Street where a woman told police that someone had keyed her Mercedes Sedan.
