Police: Van Crashes into Hydrant in Winchester

At 11:43 a.m. Aug. 6, Winchester police and fire responded to Church Street for a single-vehicle crash, according to a police report. A 30-year-old North Billerica woman, driving a 2013 Chrysler van, reportedly dropped her cell phone, went to pick it, lost control of the vehicle and went off the road, hitting a steel beam protecting the hydrant before striking the hydrant itself, according to the report. The woman's infant daughter was in the van with her at the time of the crash, according to the report. No one was injured in the crash, and the van needed to be towed after it sustained damage to the front right section and undercarriage, the report adds. The town's Water Department also responded to tend to the damage hydrant, according to the report.

A 12-year-old Winchester teen was running across Church Street when she was struck by a 2012 Volkswagen sedan traveling west on the street, according to the report. Upon arrival, police found the girl sitting on a curb on Church Street and she reportedly has scrapes on her elbows, knees and ankles. The girl was placed in a neck brace and onto a backboard and taken to Winchester Hospital for precautionary measures, according to the report. No charges were levied against the 78-year-old Lexington woman operating the Volkswagen, according to the report, as she struck the girl who was attempting to cross the street when Eastbound traffic was letting her pass but the Lexington woman was not able to stop in time. The girl reportedly hit the front of the vehicle, rolled up and over the roof and landed in the street behind the car.
