A kitchen fire that broke out at a Robinson Park home Wednesday afternoon resulted in two people suffering serious burns, according to Winchester Fire Capt. John Surabian.

At about noon, firefighters were called to 6 Robinson Park for a report of a kitchen fire. Two engines, two transporting ambulances, a ladder truck and a non-transporting ambulance responded to the scene of the single-alarm fire, according to Surabian.

"It was a fire that was unintentionally initiated by a contractor, igniting a cleaning chemical or chemicals that burned two patients," Surabian said.

Upon arrival, firefighters saw light smoke emanating from the home and both victims on the front lawn, according to Surabian. Both victims were conscious at the time, he added.

The burn victims were a male contractor and a woman who did not live at the residence but rather was a visiting family member, according to Surabian. The contractor suffered "heavy facial burns," while the woman sustained burns to her legs and hands, he added.

The name of the contractor the injured man was working for was not immediately available.

Both victims were transported to Massachusetts General Hospital, according to Surabian. He declined to comment as to whether the injuries were life-threatening or non-life-threatening.

Surabian discussed the strategy used to handle the fire.

"We went in to check for any extension, and we split up into a paramedic team to assess the patients and some of the fire teams also assisted with that while others went in to assess the damage inside," Surabian said, adding that the fire was concentrated to the kitchen and the cabinetry area.

Fire officials are still in the process of gathering more information to determine the sequence of events, but a cleaning chemical is believed to have played "a big part of (the fire)," according to Surabian.

A couple partially charred rugs could be seen on the front lawn of the residence, and windows were open to air out the home. A ladder truck was parked across from the home, and a patrolman stopped briefly at the scene.

Renovations were apparently underway inside the home, as few estimators visited the home following the blaze.
